Though Basques have lived in California for four hundred years, most started migrating here in the 1800s. For young men from the Pyrenees Mountains, shepherding in central California was a way to parlay a few years of hard work into a better life. My grandfather emigrated to Stockton from Navarre in the early 1900s to work in his cousin's boarding house, where he helped provide a home away from home--and plenty of wine--for his Basque brothers when they came in from the pastures. This wine honors Stockton's ostatuak and is worth of any bota bag
